Drugs Abuse : KNSG Establishes Free Zones In Schools

Kano State Government has expressed it’s readiness to establish drugs free zones in schools to curtail the harmful effects of drugs abuse especially among the youth.

The state commissioner of education Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa gave the assurance when he received representatives of League for Societal Protection Against Drugs Abuse who paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

In a statement signed by Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru, the Director Public Enlightenment to the Ministry, Doguwa noted that the menace of drugs abuse is becoming sensitive societal issue which he said the present administration of Abba Kabir Yusif would do everything possible to address for the betterment of it’s citizenry.

According to the Commissioner, the issue of drugs abuse now adays is becoming the number problem in this country, stressing that even other crimes that are prevailing every where had their genesis from drugs abuse.

” We are going to make it mandatory upon every school in Kano to establish drugs free zones that will be sensitizing our children on the danger of drugs abuse and this will be done with full support of all relevant stakeholders ” he said.

Umar Doguwa recalled that after swearing-in ceremony of His Excellency Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusif as Governor, the first place he visited was Kiru reformatory centre to demonstrate the concern of his administration on the danger of drug abuse to the life of youth.

Doguwa said the ministry would therefore join the crusade against drug abuse by working closely with LESPADA officials so as to actual the programme especially in all the boarding schools across the state.

The Commissioner added that the ministry would make arrangement to translate the Booklet on Drugs Abuse produced by LESPADA in to Hausa language and distributed to schools to further create awareness on the negative impact of drugs abuse among the students.

Earlier, the State Executive Director League For Societal Protection Against Drugs Abuse (LESPADA) Amb. Maryam Hassan informed the Commissioner that they were in his office to seek for possible collaboration with ministry in their sensitization programme on the danger of drugs abuse.

Ambassador Maryam disclosed that LESPADA is a non-governmental organization that enlighten the public on the negative effect of drugs abuse and it operates in 5 Northern states including Kano, Gombe, Bauchi, Platue and Katsina.

” We had a project on schools sensitization programme which we got approval to sensitize 779 schools in Kano. We had started the project but unfortunately encountered some challenges along the way so we had to suspend the programme.

” One of the challenges which is the reason why we are here is some Principals were not cooperating with us at all, when getting to their schools, they refused us access to the students.

” With the little sensitization we started, we discovered somany things, some students were in to drugs, some reported their families to us and we were able to counsel them and rehabilitate them. So, we are soliciting for the Ministry collaboration to make the project succeed ” She said.
