Kano Governor Proposes N1.368tn Budget for 2026, Education Gets 30%

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has presented a proposed N1.368 trillion budget for the 2026 fiscal year to the State House of Assembly.

The proposal was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

Tagged “Budget of Infrastructure, Inclusive Growth, and Sustainable Development,” the 2026 proposal allocates 68 percent of the total budget to capital expenditure and 32 percent to recurrent spending.

Presenting the bill before lawmakers, Governor Yusuf identified education, health, and infrastructure as the top priorities of the fiscal proposal. Education takes the largest share with 30 percent (N405bn), followed by health with 16 percent (N212bn), and infrastructure with 25 percent (N346bn).

He said the allocations reflect his administration’s commitment to human capital development and the overall well-being of residents, adding that other critical sectors were also given adequate attention.

The governor described the budget as “a covenant — a commitment to consolidate gains, complete key projects, and build lasting systems that will serve generations to come.” He further described it as “bold but grounded, aspirational yet realistic,” capturing the administration’s ambition to build a resilient and prosperous state.

Responding after receiving the document, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Isma’il Jibril Falgore, pledged the Assembly’s readiness to ensure a speedy passage of the 2026 budget. He urged Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to prepare thoroughly for the defence of their allocations.

Falgore also highlighted the legislature’s achievements over the past year and reaffirmed its continued cooperation with the executive arm in the collective effort to accelerate development in Kano State.
