The Kano State Water Board has ordered sand miners near the Wudil Waterworks to vacate the area over activities that have damaged several boreholes and disrupted water supply.
Managing Director Engr. Ahmad Garba Bichi gave the directive during an inspection visit, noting that the excavation has caused water shortages in Gaya, Warawa, Wudil and Dawakin Kudu LGAs.
He said the Board will work with the Gaya Emirate to ensure excavators move at least five kilometres away from the facility. Only four of the fifteen boreholes at the plant are currently functioning, he added.
He stated that the ongoing sand excavation in the vicinity has led to a shortage of water supply in the local government areas of Gaya, Warawa, Wudil and Dawakin Kudu, which depend on the treatment plant before the recent damage occurred.
Engr. Bichi explained that the Board will collaborate with the Gaya Emirate Council to ensure that sand excavators relocate at least five kilometres away from the water facility to prevent further harm to the communities relying on the plant.
“the situation as unfortunate, that only four out of the fifteen boreholes at the Wudil Waterworks are currently functional”.
The Managing Director added that the state government will take steps to repair the damaged boreholes to restore adequate water supply to residents within the affected areas.
Head of the Wudil Waterworks, Engr. Abubakar Awaisu Wudil, disclosed that three of the six boreholes rehabilitated by the Abba administration have already been damaged due to sand mining, leading to increased complaints of water scarcity.
“Sand excavation had damaged three out of the six boreholes rehabilitated by the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf after taking over the facility from a private company contracted by the previous government” Engr. Abubakar Awaisu Wudil, confirmed.
