AI Technology Not Fully Reliable—Journalists Must Keep Learning–Prof. Rukayya Aliyu

The Kano Online Media Chapel has organized a one-day capacity-building workshop for its members at the Kano State Ministry of Transport Goron Dutse in Kano metropolis.
Delivering a presentation on the use of Artificial Intelligence in journalism, Professor Rukayya Yusuf Aliyu of Bayero University, Kano, warned journalists against relying solely on AI tools when producing news content. She explained that despite its usefulness, AI often generates inaccurate information; therefore, journalists must use it only as a supplementary tool.

Prof. Rukayya emphasized the importance of adhering to journalism ethics, particularly verification of sources and authenticity of information before publication. She also encouraged journalists to continually update their knowledge and stay informed about modern trends rather than depending entirely on AI or other media platforms.
She revealed that Hausa language professionals are currently working tirelessly to develop a standardized Hausa language translation system to address common errors produced by AI-powered translation tools.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Wayya, reaffirmed the importance of the media in the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. He pledged continued collaboration with journalists and promised to provide an enabling environment for the association’s activities.

Also speaking, the Director-General, Media and Communications to the Governor, Alhaji Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the association and announced a donation of N2 million to support its operations.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council, Comrade Sulaiman Abdullahi Dederi—represented by the Treasurer, Comrade Nura Bala Ajingi—urged participants to uphold the ethics of the profession and continuously seek more knowledge. He assured them of the union’s unwavering support and cooperation toward achieving meaningful results.
Earlier, the Chairman of the association, Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, said the group would continue to organize such training sessions regularly to enhance members’ professional skills.

Participants including Abbas Yusha’u, Editor of Nigerian Tracker, and his counterpart from Global Tracker, Sani Garko, expressed satisfaction with the workshop, noting that they had gained valuable knowledge that would improve their journalistic output.
