Food Loss Is Threat To Hunger – Experts

The United Nations says about 13.2 percent of food is lost between harvest and retail while 19 percent is wasted in homes, restaurant and retail outlets.

 

This is contained in a message to mark International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste Reduction observed every 29th September, as this year’s commemoration is being observed  across the world.

 

The global community has been urged to take urgent and collective action to reduce food losses and waste, which continues to threaten food security, raise costs, and worsen environmental damage.

The event draws attention to the troubling paradox where millions go hungry, while tons of food are lost or wasted daily.

 

Experts warned that these losses not only deny people access to food but also waste vital resources such as water, land, energy and labor, while contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.

 

A Dietician Umar Maikarfi highlighted the essential role of food in human survival, stressing that every wasted meal is a setback to the fight against hunger and poverty.

 

He warned that food waste undermines the very resources needed for human existence and urged consumers to adopt responsible consumption habits.

Stakeholders, including governments, businesses, researchers, producers, and individuals, are called upon to strengthen policies to improve supply chain and embrace sustainable practices to minimize food loss and waste.

 

Experts concluded that tackling this crisis is key to achieving global food security, environmental sustainabilityg and a better future for all.
