The Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has adopted a series of far-reaching resolutions touching on security, governance, sports development, media professionalism and welfare following extensive deliberations at its congress.

The Council commended the Kano State Government for sustained efforts in maintaining peace and security across the state. Delegates applauded Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for prioritising security in the proposed 2026 budget and for donating vehicles and motorcycles to the Nigerian Army to strengthen security operations.

On sports development, the congress called for a comprehensive restructuring of Kano Pillars Football Club to improve its organisational efficiency and ensure the club maintains its prominence in national football.

Journalists also expressed appreciation to the state government for fostering an enabling environment that guarantees freedom of expression, noting that the absence of intimidation has supported effective media practice. The congress further lauded the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, for initiating the League of Veteran Journalists and enhancing collaboration with working journalists.

Delegates underscored the importance of strict adherence to journalistic ethics, urging media executives and practitioners to uphold accuracy in translation, proper pronunciation of names and titles, and overall professionalism. They cautioned journalists against producing content that could glamorize banditry and encouraged strict compliance with the NUJ Code of Ethics in all reportage.

The congress also called on the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies, while appealing to the Kano State Fire Service to intensify public sensitisation and strengthen preventive measures to reduce fire outbreaks.

The leadership of the Council, led by Chairman Comrade Sulaiman Abdullahi Dederi, received commendation for organising the 2025 Press Week in accordance with the NUJ constitution. The congress also appreciated the Director General, Media and Communications to the Governor, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, for settling the medical bills of veteran journalist Mallam Lawan Isah Bagwai and extending support to other ailing members.

The communiqué was signed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Sulaiman Abdullahi Dederi, and the Acting Secretary, Hauwa Suleiman Zaharaddeen. It was drafted by a committee chaired by Comrade Uba Abdullahi, with Abdullahi Muhammad as a member and Abbas Yusha’u Yusuf as the Secretary.
