One Kano Agenda Raises Alarm Over Rising Security Threats, Calls for Immediate Collective Action

The Director General of One Kano Agenda, Ambassador Abbas Yakasai, has expressed deep concern over what he described as rising security threats across Kano State, particularly in the northern zones, calling for urgent collective action from government, traditional institutions, communities, and the media.

Speaking at an emergency press conference in Kano on Tuesday, Ambassador Yakasai said the state, despite its long-standing reputation for peace and hospitality, is increasingly facing disturbing reports of insecurity, including cases of abductions, attacks on residents, and suspicious movements in several communities.

He noted that recent credible reports indicate the presence of unknown individuals operating commercial motorcycles in multiple locations, many of whom reportedly do not speak fluent Hausa — a development he said has heightened fear and suspicion among residents.

Yakasai commended the Kano State Government and security agencies for their swift intervention, particularly the enforcement of motorcycle restrictions within the metropolis.

He also applauded Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for introducing the Safe Corridor initiative, which has absorbed and profiled 2,035 youths in partnership with security agencies. The youth, he said, are to be integrated into community security, intelligence gathering, and neighborhood watch structures.

“This is the first time in Kano’s history that insecurity is being addressed through a combination of rehabilitation and enforcement,” he noted. “Previous administrations relied mainly on force and political alliances, but this government is taking a holistic and innovative approach.”

He urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, advising them to report suspicious activities immediately and avoid any form of direct confrontation.

Call to Traditional Leaders, Security Agencies, and Residents

The group called on Emirate Councils, district and village heads, and ward leaders to strengthen coordination with security agencies for timely intelligence sharing.

Residents were also encouraged to cooperate fully with police, vigilante groups, and other security structures, while security agencies were urged to intensify patrols, surveillance, and border monitoring.

Warns Against Politicisation of Security Issues

Ambassador Yakasai expressed concern over what he described as irresponsible media reports and political actors attempting to politicize security concerns in the state.

He faulted certain publications for ignoring what he termed “disturbing developments,” including the alleged withdrawal of police personnel from known flashpoints and redeployment to non-essential duties, leaving vulnerable communities exposed.

“One Kano Agenda warns that reckless politicisation of security matters is dangerous and counterproductive,” he said. “The focus must remain on protecting lives, not advancing political or personal interests.”

Comments on Security Directives Involving Former Governor, Senator

Reacting to recent directives by Governor Yusuf concerning a former governor and a serving senator, Yakasai said One Kano Agenda supports due process and professionalism in handling all matters, regardless of individuals’ status.

As part of efforts to promote unity and divine intervention, he announced that One Kano Agenda is organizing a Peace Walk and a Prayer for Divine Intervention for the peace of Kano and Northern Nigeria. Details will be announced soon.

Yakasai urged all stakeholders — especially the media and political actors — to prioritize the safety and well-being of the people by avoiding sensationalism and promoting accurate, responsible reporting.

“May Almighty Allah protect Kano, the North, and Nigeria at large,” he concluded.
