KASSOSA Urges Students to Embrace Career Guidance, Entrepreneurship

By Nura Ajingi

Prospective university students have been urged to pay closer attention to career and entrepreneurship opportunities linked to their chosen courses of study.

Experts say many academic programmes now provide pathways not only to formal employment but also to business creation and self-reliance.

The secretary-general of the Kano Science Schools Old Students Association, KASSOSA Old Kano (Kano/Jigawa Chapter), and education advocate Malam Abubakar Abdu Yakasai gave the advice in an interview.

He said students should look beyond certificates and focus on the practical skills embedded in their courses, noting that many university programmes now equip graduates for self-employment and job creation.

Malam Yakasai identified programmes such as forensic science, software engineering, automotive engineering, animal science, early childhood education, and primary education as courses with strong career prospects.

“Graduates of these programmes can establish businesses and provide services capable of generating employment for others,” he said.

He also encouraged students to identify areas of specialization within their disciplines and build expertise around them. According to him, opportunities exist in virtually every field, including Chemistry, Health Education, and Animal Science, for students willing to explore innovative and entrepreneurial applications of their training.

On health, the scholar stressed the importance of preventive healthcare. He urged young people to adopt healthy lifestyles through balanced diets, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management. He noted that many developed countries now prioritize prevention to reduce pressure on healthcare systems.

On educational support, Malam Yakasai disclosed that scholarship opportunities are available, especially for students interested in studying French at Bayero University, Kano. He added that philanthropists and community-based organizations continue to support indigent students to pursue higher education and develop their talents.
