NUJ Kano Council Inauguates New Exco, Vows To Advocate Welfare, Rights Of Journalists

The Nigerian Union Of Journalists (NUJ) Kano State Council, on Saturday swore in newly executive council members, embarking on a new journey of its leadership.

Speaking after the taking of an oath to the office, the newly elected council chairman, Comrade Suleiman Abdullahi Dederi vowed to uphold the higher standards of journalism, advocating the welfare and the rights of the journalists.

He went on explaining to foster unity and collaboration within the council, also promised to focus on professional development among other things, including equipping members with skills and knowledge that matched the digital age in journalism industry.

Comrade Dederi, acknowledged the ‘exemplary record’ of dedication and hardworking of the outgoing executive members under the leadership of Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, which he said has laid a solid foundation to be continued on by the new Exco.

On his part, the outgoing chairman Comrade Abbas Ibrahim expressed his gratitude to Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf who settled all of the outstanding professionals fees to the members of the council which made it possible to organize the inauguration ceremony.

He thanked commissioner for information, Baba Halilu Dantiye who in addition facilitated a request process to host a recent media week under the council, he also appeals that the Commissioner will continue to do the same with the incoming Exco.

In his remarks, the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Malam Baba Halilu Dantiye Mni, has commended the style of the transition which he described as the most peaceful one (without dispute) in the history of the council over the years.

He further assured of the government’s support toward the development of the council and journalism profession, under the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf.

“And you the incoming leadership you need to learn a lot especially by promoting the council’s relationship with other unions like NLC, police and even we ‘the state government’ I don’t think we have any dispute with you, or with one of the journalists since inception of our administration, we therefore congratulates you and wishes you a successful discharge of responsibility,” Dantiye said.

The NAWOJ National President, Hajiya Aisha Ibrahim Bura described the outgoing chairman Abbas Ibrahim as a simple and a good leader who left behind ‘an unprecedented achievements’ during his term in office, she urged the incoming leadership to maintain the tempo.

Earlier in his remark, the National Vice President of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Comrade Kabir Ado Minjibir stated that there is a good relationship between labour and the immediate past Exco of NUJ Kano State Council which has just been dissolved on Saturday 10th August, 2024. He pledged to maintain the same with the new Exco.

Members of the new executives who sworn in by Comrade Abdulrazak Bello Kaura, the zonal secretary zone (A) of the national body of the union and former chairman NUJ Zamfara State Council, they includes:
Comrade Suleiman Abdullahi Dederi (Chairman).
Comrade Mustapha Gambo Muhammad (Vice Chairman).
Abubakar Shehu Kwaru (Secretary).
Hauwa Suleiman Zahraddeen (Ass Secretary).
Nura Bala Ajingi (Treasurer).
Abdullahi Hassan (Financial Secretary).
Salisu Kassim (Auditor).

The Chairman Screening and Credentials Committe, Comrade Salisu Babangida made a welcome address, and a remark by the Zonal Vice President of the NUJ, Muhammad Tukur Umar.

The occasion is blessed with attendance of the top Kano State Government officials as Information Commissioner and Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice and MD Pilgrims Board among others. Also at the event are the Police and Road Safety, and Veterans Journalists from the different angles of the media.

An award of excellence was presented to the outgoing Exco members as ‘Eminent Peace Ambassadors’ EPA.
